Why the hints work this way
Most sudoku apps hint by filling a cell in. That gets you past the cell, but you never learn why that digit belongs there, so the same wall stops you next time.
So this one searches the techniques a person actually uses, easiest first, and shows the reason before the digit. It also hints at which candidates to erase, not only which digits to place. All thirteen techniques are laid out in how to solve.
How the puzzles are made
- They are built in your browser. A puzzle you have already solved is not handed to you again.
- Each one is checked to finish without guessing. A fresh puzzle is solved end to end by the hint engine; if it stalls, it is thrown away and another is built.
- The answer is verified to be unique. Every time a digit is removed, the puzzle is re-checked for a single solution, and the removal is undone if a second one appears.
- The level comes from the techniques it needs. Some grids with 22 clues fall apart in a minute, so the level is the hardest technique the solve actually needed.
